Seeking a Friend For The End of The World

Netflix DVD – they rated it as 3.8 stars for me, and 3.4 for the general audience. I’m going to give it 4 stars. After briefly thinking I would give it 3 in the middle, I liked the direction they took toward the end. This movie is mostly a drama, but with a fair amount of comedy mixed in, and with a bunch of eclectic and fun music. It’s an interesting premise – what would YOU do if you found out the world was going to end in three weeks?

I suspect not many people would bother to go to work the next day, though I know some would. I’m sure many would want to spend time with their families and do things they always wanted to do. There are some pretty funny moments along those lines in this movie. [SPOILERS]

The writers set it up so that both Steve Carell and Keira Knightley (I sure seem to be seeing a lot of movies with her in them these days) are suddenly without romantic partners – his wife literally walks away from him without even looking back, when hearing the news about the upcoming end. She (KK) breaks up with her boyfriend, thus freeing the two lead characters up to hit the road in search of lost loves and family. In real life, he’s 52 and she’s 29, so that’s the perfect age gap for a couple, and they make a convincing pair after we get to know them better – because at first they don’t seem suited for each other. Rotten Tomatoes only has it at 56%, with the audience at 52%, so it’s another one of those “my kind of weird” movies, though I certainly don’t think it was great … just good. People complained about the ending, but really, what else could they have done? It’s not like we want to see the actual horrific ending of the world, is it?!
